Making Spreader Bars

Spreader bars are a wonderful way of sperating someones limbs when you don't have access to posts (i.e. bed frames, table legs, etc). What also makes these toys nice is that they are easy to store and relatively portable. They can easily be slipped under the bed, in the closet, or behind a door to get them out of the way. As for being portable, that depends more upon how large they are. The instructions below describe how to make a set that will easily fit in the trunk or backseat of a car and can easily be carried.

Materials Needed
  • 1- 4 foot wooden, 1/2inch dowel
  • 2- solid brass cup hooks (about 3/4inch diameter)
  • 2- small cat collars (I recommend the clip type instead of the traditional buckle)
  • 1- bottle black acrylic paint
  • 1- paint brush
  • 1- pair of pliers
INSTRUCTIONS

1. Screw the cup hooks into the ends of the wooden dowel. The hooks need to be anchored in the wood fairly tight so that they don't rip out later.

2. Using the black paint and paint brush apply two coats of black paint to the dowel, be sure to allow the paint to dry between coats.

3. Slip first cat collar onto one hook.

4. Using pliers, squeeze the end of the hook forming an eye bolt.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the other hook and collar.

6. If necessary, use a fine grit sand paper to smooth out the edges of the bar or any rough areas from the paint.

7. Use and enjoy your spreader bars.

I would recommend for this project approximately 3 hours. Paint color and dowel length may need to be varied.
